Security and compliance

If you want to play with the big boys, you have to play by their rules. This was the case with a client working in the financial services industry when they were awarded a contract from one of the larger investment firms.

A condition of the contract is that they needed to comply with a list of high availability and security requirements – well above what they presently had in place. They sent their list of requirements to us and we put together a project plan to roll out these changes within the required timeframe.

The requirements around security extended to ensuring that only company owned and controlled devices were permitted to connect to the network – this required the installation of enterprise grade Cisco switching gear, and the setup of 802.1x authentication so that it would only allow authorised computers to connect to the network points. This also extended to wireless access, which requires both a key, and the device to be allowed to join the network.

Our client also needed to invest in a secure hosted disaster recovery location which holds an active replicated copy of the entire company file system, with the ability for the business to operate from an offsite location should the primary office be lost. This is made possible through Microsoft server software combined with Cisco dynamic routing and VPN technologies, on two independent internet connections delivered over different media by different internet service providers.

Company owned devices can connect back to the main office or disaster recovery site using Microsoft Direct Access, which provides a seamless experience for users irrespective of their location. The company maintains full control over these devices and can disable them remotely if they are stolen.
